hey baby... what's your username?

For this course (Computer Aided Language Learning) I've signed up for blogs, wikkis, moodles, and internet phone service. I generally consider myself fairly tech savvy, but I'm being slowly humbled.

First, I've confused myself about where all of the discussion threads I'm supposed to keep up with are. I think there maybe more than there are students in the course. I read some of them when I sign in to our course environment, others come to my email. The ones that come to my email, I'm not sure where to find them online, so I can't reply to them.

Second, I signed up for all of these services on different days, and usually late at night. Apparently, I had a different idea about what i would use for my username and password each day, so getting back in has been slightly bothersome.

I'm not sure exactly how we'll be expected to use this blog for the course. I think the discussion threads are a great place to "converse" online. I know we'll be checking in on our prof's blog. I'm not sure if we'll be checking in on eachother's.

Anyway I just posted this rambling mess to play around with the site. It's been fun.

Until my next posting (assuming I find my way back to this place), I'm signing off.

:)

No doubt that this can be confusing at first. By mid-February, this will be second nature :) (trust me)

Stick with Moodle as your guide. Everything you have to do is linked from there, including the discussion forum.

If you are getting emails from the Moodle discussion, you are "subscribed" to a topic. There is a tutorial at the topic of the Moodle course page that explains how to turn this on and off. I leave it on because I like to know when a new message has been posted, but most folks find it a little too much.

These blogs will be used an a few different ways.

(1) The reading reflections. In the past, too much of the discussion focused on describing the readings to other students who read the same thing. Not a great way to encourage discussion in the forum. So, I though reflection on the readings would go well here. Also, they would be open to the public who might like to read your reflections on popular readings in the field.

(2)Reflections on and reviews of websites/software. This is a great way to organize and detail the sites and applications that you've used.

(3) Comments on each of these. Everyone in the class, including me, will comment on each other's blogs. This fosters the kind of interaction that blogs have become known for.

Lastly, you'll probably get an email when I post this comment---it's coming from your blog :)
